Generous rainfall in the winter and early spring contributed to one of the best wildflower displays in the park’s history during spring 2001. Big Bend bluebonnets grew as tall as three feet high. The bluebonnets shown here grow near the western end of the River Road, about six miles east of Cerro Castellan. Way off in the distance are the Chisos Mountains.

A 3 foot Big Bend bluebonnet isn’t trying very hard. In 2005, we measured several that were at least 57″ tall. We’re in Big Bend now and they are just starting. Saw one on Rough Run(StudyButte), yesterday, that measured 37″ and it will be much taller by the time it’s done. Really enjoy your pictures. We’re here in January-March, so don’t get to see Cattail Falls flowing like your picture. They got some good rains and it looks like there should be a good flowering this year.
