Bluebonnets and Desert Marigold ©2001 Jeff Blaylock

Throughout March, I’m featuring photographs taken five years ago, during what the locals referred to as the best blooming season in Big Bend in a generation.
I’ve never been very good at telling members of the sunflower family apart. The yellow ones look like desert marigold to me, but it could be one of dozens of other species. The blue ones are definitely Big Bend bluebonnets. This photo was taken along the western end of the River Road.
