Big Bend Rainbow (6/26)

The highlight of this weekend’s quick jaunt to Big Bend was witnessing this magnificent rainbow from a perch above Burro Spring, a seldom visited part of the park. Since there were few people there this weekend — virtually none of them outside the Basin — it’s likely this rainbow went largely unseen. Certainly, I was its only witness from this vantage point.
The Chimneys appear as a little pale wall just to the right of where the rainbow appears to touch the desert. They are in sunlight, while the formation behind it is in shadow. Santa Elena Canyon is also visible here. If you look at the small set of clouds just above the cliffs, the canyon is the dark Y-shaped feature beneath the right edge of these clouds. The eagle-eyed might also make out a small arc of a double rainbow in the far left portion of the photo.
The lush trees in the foreground are about 100 feet beneath where this photo was taken. They mark the water course for Burro Spring. Songbirds were singing joyously, and a light rain was falling on them, the trees, and the photographer.
