Chisos had her first visit to the vet today (with me, anyway — she’d already had one round of vaccines and been spayed before I got her). She weighs 6 pounds, 14 ounces and is healthy and parasite-free. All of the staff at the Burnet Road Animal Hospital fell in love with her instantly, and she was a good, brave little girl. She cried out when she got her shot and spent the rest of the visit either glued to my arm or asleep on the examining table. I think the shot has her little system pretty taxed because she’s been asleep ever since we got home. My three attempts to get her up and moving have been short-lived and futile. She was pretty active this afternoon which probably also is contributing to her laziness this afternoon. I hope she will sleep through the night after sleeping through the afternoon.

It won’t be long before I submit my request for backcountry permits for my July trip to Yosemite National Park. Permits for popular trailheads should be requested at the earliest possible time to provide greatest chance of success. Other elements of the trip are also coming together as I make “final” decisions on getting there and coming back. I won’t be renting a car, so all travel will use public transportation.

The rough itinerary has me departing Austin on July 5 and returning July 20. The first leg will be a flight to Fresno, where I’ll spend the first night in a hotel there. I will take an Amtrak train to Merced and then a bus to Yosemite Valley. I already have reservations for a tent “cabin” in Curry Village the nights of the 6th and the 7th. I will take a shuttle to Glacier Point the morning of the 7th and dayhike the Panorama Trail to the John Muir Trail back to Happy Isles and (hopefully) catch a shuttle back to Curry Village (else I’ll hoof it).

The backpack begins on the 8th. My plan is to take a tour bus up the Tioga Pass Road to the Lukens Lake Trailhead to avoid having to hike out of Yosemite Valley. My route will follow Yosemite Creek south to the brink of Yosemite Falls, then across the north rim of the valley to North Dome and around Indian Rock to Snow Creek, where I plan to camp the night of the 8th.
