While searching for USGS quads for my upcoming trip to Colorado, I stumbled across an online archive of every 1:24K and 1:100K quad, available for free download:
The Libre Map Project
The only catch is, the maps are collarless, which means you can’t look at one of them an know the adjacent quads by name. Instead, you have to search by their grid designation. This could be troublesome, until you crack the code.

With the legislative session a hair past half over, and coincident with a fare sale by Southwest Airlines, I’ve booked my post-session trip to Colorado. Along with sub-$200 airfare, I’ve also reserved a campsite for three nights in Rocky Mountain National Park, a place I last visited in 1998. I’ve booked a hotel near the Denver airport for the last night at a deep discount. I’m giving myself four days of hiking and three nights of camping just after the veto period ends and likely before any potential special session begins.
The year’s big trip will be to Idaho in August. I’m considering two trips east to see the Frogs on the road, Sept. 12 in Charlottesville, Va., and two weeks later in Clemson, S. Car. If I still have any vacation time left, then some time on the Mesa de Anguilla in Big Bend in early November is also on the list. For 2010, Alaska and Hawaii would round out all 50 states, getting me to all 50 by 40 (years old, that is).
